Haliburton Rotary Sept. 5, 2002 Our meeting was called to order at 18:15 by President Jim Richards. We sang O Canada, toasted Queen and Country and sang Rotary Grace. Guests this evening included Don Downey and Miky Rastello, our new exchange student. The Sergeant at Arms tonight was Brian Black. First on the list was Ray Selbie, for setting up the projector facing the back of the room. Next was Steve Roberts, fined for forcing food on Miky. Nancy Bishop was asked about consuming warm beer on a recent trip abroad, gave an unsatisfactory answer and was fined. Len Pizzey received a fine in advance of his increased taxes, since he now lives next to a golf course. A double fine went to Andy Glecoff and Tracey McMullen, neither of whom introduced the guest at their table (Luke Schell). Art Ward came late, and paid. Finally, Kim Emmerson was offered the option of fine or favour – he chose favour and will be fixing the broken banner. On the issue of birthdays, a belated birthday wish to any August birthdays and a fine to Linda Beachli for not getting the birthday list from her partner Maureen O’Hara. Art Ward spoke briefly about a favourite charity of his, the Ontario Camp for the Deaf operated in association with Bob Rumble’s School for the Deaf. Their annual golf tournament is set for September 19 – talk to Art if interested. Art also has draw tickets for travel to the West Indies or on Via Rail – the first place winner can choose between the two, all others must take the Via tickets. Brian Menton still needs billets for visiting GSE members for the evenings of September 24th and 25th . President Jim presented the combined Carnival and Car Report – mostly good news, although the Carnival and Car netted $2,542 less than last year. VP Steve request advanced notice on any questions or issues for his first Club Assembly next week. The District Conference is still beginning on September 26 and will be preceded by a Quad-Club meeting hosted by our club on September 25. Tonight’s Program Ray Selbie introduced Janet McLeod, our district Polio Plus Co-ordinator. Janet had lots of pictures from her trip earlier this year to Nigeria where she helped with the surveillance team during the National Immunization Program. Clearly from Janet’s talk she was impressed by the organization for this event and the immense difficulty that has been inherent in attempting to eliminate polio around the world. In 1988 there were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio worldwide – compared to roughly 3000 in the year 2000. RI has provided about 25% of the funding required for this effort – close to 1.8 million dollars. To complete the effort RI needs to raise about 80 million dollars over the next 3 years – this equates to about $300 per member. Janet finished by introducing Ray as our club co-ordinator – Ray will be looking for your support and ideas as we all strive to reach this important RI goal. Tracey McMullen said thanks. September 12 – VP Steve Roberts has his first club assembly September 19 – Brian Menton September 25 – Quad-Club Meeting The meeting was adjourned by President Jim at 19:33.
