September 19, 2002

Our meeting was called to order at 18:15 by President Jim Richards. We sang O Canada, toasted Queen and Country and sang Rotary Grace. Guests this evening included Don Downey, Dave Reynolds from Drag Lake and Ursula, daughter of the Beachli’s. Also in the house tonight were several spouses for tonight’s program.

Sergeant at Arms Brian Black began with a general fine for all who came without a spouse. Peter Forgrave received one for his recent poor Soprano imitation and visitor Reynolds received one for being a friend of Black’s.

President Jim called for votes on the Sir Sanford Fleming College donation and the Vernon Moore scooter donation – both passed.

Peter Forgrave spoke about the upcoming Christmas Auction. The theme will be Creative Christmas Gifts, it will be on Friday night again and Peter still needs committee members. Talk to Peter if you want to help out with this fun event.

Dues will be due on October 1 – bring your cheque with you soon. If you didn’t pick up your copy of the year end photo, pick one up when you drop off your cheque.

President Jim announced that he will be getting a number of Unicef boxes for distribution to local businesses during October.

Dale Walker, Dave Gray, Andy Glecoff and Ray Selbie were recognized for their dedication and effort over the past five years raising money for the hospital foundation. President Jim presented a cheque for $13,000, completing our club’s $250,000 commitment to the foundation. Everyone said thanks, including Jerry Walker, who was president when it all got started.

President Andy asked for a volunteer to be present at HHSS during graduation – Kim Emmerson agreed.

Tonight’s Program

Prior to the program beginning, President Jim thanked Brian Black, Art Dawson, Dave Bishop and Jim Henwood for their contributions to the program. Then Brian Menton introduced Danielle Perry of Lacy’s International, a wine and spirits importer. She led us through a wine tasting experience such as many have likely not known. The question is, does the wine taste any better when you know how to observe, smell, sip and swallow? Only the tasters know for sure.

Tonight’s wines came from France, Ontario, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria and Australia and included varietals and blends aged in barrels and in the bottle. Some were red and some were white. Need we say more, except thanks Danielle.

Wednesday, September 25 – Quad-Club Meeting – at the Pinestone
