The Rotooter Year End Meeting June 27, 2002 Group Photo: Luke Schell and Dave Elstone lined the Club up on the pavement instead of the grassy hill this year. Seemed like a long time to take the shot. Talk about 1 hour photo! Seriously, thanks to Luke Schell who has unselfishly done this task each year. The results speak for themselves. Luke also took a shot of all past presidents who were in attendance for our year-end gala. The weather was perfect and the meeting was very enjoyable.
Meeting Highlights: Outgoing President Andy Salvatori entertained us with excerpts from old Rotooter’s during our delicious roast beef dinner. Some of the editor’s comments were amusing and many comments could still ring true today! Year-end meetings are nostalgic in a lot of ways and President Andy did his homework in preparation for the evenings festivities. Good job Andy!
Guests: I hope that I caught them all: Linda Brandon and Jerry Grozelle who organize the Minden "Terry Fox Run", Eva and Bruce Griffith who organize the Haliburton location run each year. David Elstone, Bob McNaull, Scotty Larue, Gerry Dawson, Al Bagg, Susan and Don Tedford (Rotarians from Grand Bend), Neil Walker, Murray Fearrey, Cathy Henwood, Marilyn Hawley, Len Salvatori, Jim Scheffee, Gary Brohman, Peter Curry,Lance Easton, Don Downey, Jaquie Richards, Kathy Salvatori, Lynda Shadbolt, Jamie Cowan and our exchange student Sabrina Lemme.
Transgressions: Sounds like a work that a teacher would use! Peter Forgrave ended out the year with his Sergeant at Arms duty. Dale Robinson and David Bishop assisted him this year. He passed the "pot" around (not the kind that you smoke!) and raised $600.00 for Sabrina’s trip across Canada next week. Good job this year fellows!
Perfect Attenders: This is when we recognize those members who never missed a meeting this year. They are as follows: Dorothy Menton (2), Brian Menton (2), Jim Henwood (?) , Ted Brandon (6), Brian Black (26) and Curry Bishop with an outstanding 39 years ! Great work everyone!
Fred Jones Award: President Andy briefly described what the Fred Jones award was. (Internet readers can refer to our web page). Our 34th recipient this year was none other than Brian Menton. A great choice Andy! Brian certainly has exemplified "Service above Self" on many occasions and is certainly deserving of the award. Brian coincidentally will be the speaker this coming week (July 4th), which is a Spouses night, and he will show slides form the recent GSW team to South Korea.
Guest Speaker: The current Club President always tries to get a keynote speaker for our year-end meeting. President Andy outdid himself this year when he introduced Darrell Fox, brother of the late Terry Fox. Darrel is the National Director of the Terry Fox Foundation. It seems like yesterday, but it was 22 years ago when Terry ran across part of Canada to raise funds for Cancer research. Darrell was a great speaker with a great story. He is still emotional after all these years and he pointed out that the funds raised each year are still growing. Darrell also spoke about the kind of person that Terry was. He had a motto of "Believe in yourself" and he did just that. Terry taught us that one person can make a difference. He ran for 143 days in the Marathon of Hope, on one leg. Over $300 million dollars has been raised and the money is doing good things. In reference to Terry’s cancer, he was given a 20% chance to live a normal lifetime when he was diagnosed 22 years ago. Now, a person with similar circumstances would be given an 80% chance today. Darrell was thanked by Jim Richards and was handed a cheque for $500.00 towards his Foundation.
Review of 2001-2002:
President Andy closed out his year by going over our projects and also pointed out how much money we raised and spent. He thanked his board members and the club members for all their work. He also added that we inducted 7 new members this year. A New President!: Jim Richards accepted the chain of office. He mentioned how his tenure on the board was "fast-tracked". Jim went over the theme for 2002-2003 as handed down form RI President Bhichai Rattakul. It is "Sow the Seeds of Love". "...To Sow the Seeds of Love is to find opportunities to serve every day, every moment of our lives. To Sow the Seeds of Love is to think of others first, and ourselves in terms of what we can do for others..." Jim has 3 objectives for the year: Membership growth Preparation for the Centennial Celebration of 100 years in 2005 The Polio Eradication Campaign
We look forward to your year Jim! Best of luck! N.B. In two weeks time, District Governor Susan Cook will be our guest. Please do not forget the spouses meeting this week. Web viewers will be enjoying photos of our year-end meeting courtesy Luke Schells camera. Website Update: A years worth of Rotooters has been wiped off the web site. You may wish to view our newly updated Committee Lists, Future Meetings, a spanky photo of our new President or review listings of our Past Presidents or Fred Jones recipients.
Have a great week! Kim
