The Rotooter July 11, 2002
Last Weeks Speaker: Brian Black introduced District Governor Sue Cook to our Club. Sue hails from Penetangwashine. Being that this is a new Rotary year, this was her first Club visit. Only 43 to go! Steve Roberts escorted her around Haliburton earlier in the day and showed her the magnificent sights of Haliburton! Sue started off by asking us to consider the benefits to our community because of our Club. She covered off the usual avenues of service that we practice and threw in a few thought-provoking quotes such as " Greatness lies in how we exercise our ideals." She also explained the RI theme for the year "Sow the seeds of Love". She also mentioned major thrusts this year, one concerning the lack of good water in third world countries. Twenty seven thousand children die daily worldwide due primarily to the lack of good water. As previously mentioned at our year-end meeting, this year should be the year that Polio will be totally eradicated worldwide. Apparently, there are only 104 cases left in the world right now. Sue went on to motivate us by reminding the members "Your service to others is a gift to yourself". She also threw in a plug for the upcoming Convention, which will be held in Royun-Noranda, Quebec. The last one that was held there was 20 years ago. We look forward to a great year Sue! The District Governor was thanked by Steve Roberts. Sergeant at-arms: We have a year of Don Popple to get used to! Don seems to know what is going on and will make a great Sergeant! Thank- you’s: President Jim read out various thank-you letters. Guests: There were 5 guests this week
Golf Day: Andy Glecoff reviewed the details of the July 25th Golf Day. A reminder that this will be our meeting that week. So far, the tournament is oversold by 2 foursomes. Forty hole sponsors have donated for the event. The success of this tournament should allow us to finish our financial commitment to the Haliburton Highlands Health Services Foundation. Andy and committee wish to raise $50,000 at this tournament. He is still looking for auction items. Not every golfer will get a prize this year. One of the bigger prizes is a 5-day trip to Bermuda. Good work Andy and committee members !
GSE Team: Brian Menton mentioned that the next GSE team is heading to Africa! The District is looking for applications for a team leader (by July 31st) and members (by August 31st). The members must be between 25 and 40 years old. See Brian if you have questions. Tent: By this time, the Highland Games has come and gone. Thanks to the members that raised and lowered the tent and also for those that bartended.
Car Draw: The early bird draw (part of the car draw) was held on beautiful Friday evening on the main street of Haliburton. The winner was Penny Vanson from Bowmanville. Bob Stinson was the seller of the lucky $2500.00 ticket. Lynda Porter called to confirm that 1806 tickets have been sold to date. Do not forget to turn your stubs in to Henwoods. Have a great week! Kim
