February 20, 2003

President Jim Richards called the meeting to order at 16:20 with the singing of O Canada, toast to Queen and Country and Rotary Grace. There were 25 members present and three guests, Lance Edwards, Marilyn Hawley and Matt (who came with Troy Austen).

Sergeant at Arms for the night, Jim Miners, started by asking anyone selling gas for more than $0.799 to pay a fine to make the rest of us feel better. Jim Henwood has been giving customers more that they ask for in the way of a free shower, so he was fined. Sean Hawley missed so many meetings that he forgot the importance of moving quickly through the dessert table, and he was fined. And Brian Menton, always anxious to contribute, received a fine for delaying the arrival of spring by not starting to collect sap.

President Jim provided an update on John Gunning’s situation courtesy of Wendy – he is presently undergoing a second round of chemotherapy and would welcome a call or even some reading material to pass the time.

Brian Menton, presently leading in the race to sell car tickets, spoke about the draw. Tickets and sample letters were distributed – the letter is also available on our website. Money for tickets sold should go to the Bishop and Rogers Law Office or Brian Menton. Final point – there will be a prize for the first person to sell 80 tickets.

Hugh Nichol spoke about the 60/60 membership campaign. He received a lot of responses to his questionnaire, mostly from older and long-time members. If you haven’t responded to Hugh, please do so before the next meeting since he is planning to provide a summary at that time.

President Jim read a note from John Osterland thanking us for our $12,000 commitment to the Polio Eradication Fund. President Jim also asked for nominations for this year’s Fred Jones Award, presented each year to the club member who best demonstrates "service above self". President Jim announced that two HHSS students, Sarah Oakley and Ainsly Thomas, will be attending Adventures in Tourism at Elmhurst’s.

VP Steve Roberts reminded us that next week is club assembly and that questions, topics, concerns, etc should be provided to him beforehand.

Tonight’s Program

Although Troy and Curry had tonight’s program, our guest speaker "introduced" himself. In case you missed it, John Beachli hasn’t been around for a while. He’s been spending his time in and around Southeast Asia, looking at rocks, carvings, ruins and people.

John entertained us with stories and observations from his recent trip which began in New Zealand and ended in Vietnam. Along the way he visited Angkor Wat, a famous Cambodian site, now in ruins. It sounds as though he met lots of great people, saw some sights and sites that most of us won’t get to see, risked life and limb a little, and came back to share his adventure with us. In a way, he kind of reminds the writer of Uncle Traveling Mat, the adventurous character who left Fraggle Rock to see the world and brought back stories for the Fraggles to enjoy.

Thanks for the adventure, John.
