Guest Speaker: Our club’s own Len Pizzey provided an informative talk about the history of the printed word. Len alleges that there are 4 "tipping points" in print history that marked significant changes in the world.

Pre 1450: Until this date all printed word, books etc were done by hand. There were only a few thousand books in existence.

1450: This is the year Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press which allowed pages to be copied relatively quickly allowing for multiple copies of books and literature. Gutenberg’s first project was a Bible.

Linotype Machines: Around 1884 the invention of this massive machine caused the third revolution in printing. These machines allowed individual letters to be arranged and changed by use of a keyboard. Len indicated that as late as the early 1970’s the Haliburton Echo was produced using this technology taking 2 days to print.

Phototype setting: Although hand typed and hand assembled this technology has evolved into the high tech digital print technology of today. This allows for all print including full colour pictures to be produced, stored and transported digitally. Len says the amount of work has not diminished but the type of work and the demands have certainly changed. That’s progress!! Thank you Len.
