The Rotooter

November 7, 2002

Guests:

Maira Micaleff, a proposed member who is the Innkeeper at Wig-a-mog. We also had a visiting Rotarian George Moore who is from the Bowmanville club.

Happy Buck:

Linda Beachli proudly informed us that her daughter Ursula gave birth to a baby boy. His name will be George. Congratulations to Barry, Ursula and the whole Beachli family.

Birthdays:

Ray Selbie is one year older. He was presented with a "turtle" stapler. One might surmise that he could be kidded about the time that it takes to staple a cheque on a real-estate deal!

Andy Salvatori had his birthday on today’s date. What a team player to come to Rotary! He was presented with a stuffed Goose.

Business:

Fellow Rotarian Sean Hawley was granted a leave of absence.

Exchange student Michela was given a student exchange jacket by our club. President Jim read out a thank-you letter.

Dale Walker sent a letter from the HHHS Foundation, thanking us once again for our donation.

Melanie Howatt sent a letter thanking us for the scholarship that she received at the high school awards presentation on Thanksgiving weekend.

We also were recognized for our donation to the Rails End Gallery ($250.00).

Exchange chairman Drew informed us that a new outgoing student has been chosen for next year. Her name is Emily Bjelis. She will be departing in February. He also thanked Rotarians Ted, Jim Richards and Dorothy Menton for their help.

President Jim asked for a vote to see if we wished to continue the partnership with the HHHS and Pinestone for next year’s Golf day. A discussion ensued and we discovered that 10% of our proceeds were earmarked for the Polio Plus campaign. The club voted to continue.

President Jim (and quite possibly Jacquie) has provided us with an updated schedule for upcoming meetings. Members who receive this bulletin electronically may click here to review.

Rotary Auction:

This year will mark our 17th time that we have held this event. It is on Friday November 22nd at Wig-a-Mog. Cocktails and viewing start at 6:00 PM. Dinner is at 7:00. The popular theme of "Creative Christmas Gifts" should guide your donation and buying decisions.

Chairman Peter Forgrave distributed information sheets. He needs to know your menu choice (Smoked Breast of Chicken or Grilled Sirloin) and also the number of guests. You can return the form to Peter, Dorothy or Brian. Rotarians on the Internet, look forward to an e-mail from Peter that I will forward when he is ready regarding bidding items etc. Peter will not be able to be available on auction night. He did however remark that wine, pizza, a laptop and a satellite system were up for grabs. We had 90 people there last year.

Christmas Party:

Linda Beachli has been working to make this event a most memorable one. It is on December 7th at Wig-a-mog. She has organized 112 seats with a maximum of 8 persons per table. It will be $60.00/person and she is offering a whopping deal for persons who reserve a table of 8 for $475.00 ! Tickets will be available next week and you can pre-book the tables.

Our speaker:

Dereck Knowles introduced Allison Mack who updated us on her involvement with the SIRCH Community Hospice Program for Haliburton County. Allison is a speech therapist but volunteers with this program.

The program provides emotional, practical and spiritual support to individuals and their families through the challenge of a life-threatening illness or bereavement. It is channeled through the SIRCH organization as it fits into the initiatives that support members of the community.

The volunteers receive 45 hours of training and are fully screened. They visit the clients in their homes, hospital or long-term care facility. Hospice is focused on caring, not curing. The volunteers care for the person and their family. It is a non-judgmental, confidential and the volunteers can do practical measures like letter writing, transportation to appointments, feeding or walks.

Allsion also mentioned that Haliburton County has 20% of the population over 65 years old and 42% are over 50. In 2001, 2139 hours of support was given. She also mentioned that a fund-raising event for ultra violet counterfeit bill detectors will be launching soon. Allison was thanked by Don Popple.

Upcoming:

Don Watkins will be coming from Peterborough to talk about Foundation giving. There is also a Board meeting prior to this meeting.

This week:  Bucks will elude hunters. (Except at Curry's Camp !)
